Comcast's Latest Changes

It's been a busy few weeks for Comcast as they've finally come out and put a cap on users accounts and also announced plans to start throttling the bandwidth hogs. Beyond that today I was trying to send some e-mail through my own web server and realized I could no longer reach it at port 25, so yes, now Comcast has started blocking 25 in my area as well.

All isn't bad with the Comcast experience though. They provide a fast service and I can't really complain about the up time I've experienced here over the many years I've used them. But let's take a look at what they're doing now and see if it's really fair or not.

250GB Per Month Cap

At first I thought "crap, I download a ton of stuff, this is going to suck!" And then I did the math. 250GB a month (both upload and download combined) give you 8GB of bandwidth a day to play with. That's a LOT of bits moving around. I put a bandwidth application on my router and went out to try and download anything I wanted for the month. At the end of the test I wasn't even close to the cap.

I download a bunch of high-def video podcasts every month, I trade lossless live music files, I upload and download files for work and use VoIP. What I ended up using was about 1/2 the 250GB per month cap. Of course, if you're in a situation where you're sharing one pipe with two or three high use users then you're going to have problems since Comcast doesn't like to install more than one cable modem per address, but they might have to start allowing that more now that we've got a cap.

Throttling The Hogs

Along with the caps Comcast has also decided to throw the bandwidth hogs in the slow lane, if the network is busy at the time. That means if you saturate your connection for at least 15 minutes either up or down then you'll be switched from the express lanes to the locals if you will. Your connection will slow down to "near DSL speeds" until you've gone another 15 minutes without saturating either your upload or download pipe.

I don't think this is that unfair either. It sounds like over 70% is the magic number, so really all you have to do is set your torrents (or whatever big files your sending or receiving) to only use 69% of your pipe and you're golden. Also, if Comcast is being truthful here, these throttling measures will not kick in if the network isn't busy at the time. To me this seems like a fair way to make sure everyone gets the bandwidth they're paying for. Cable internet is a shared resource, deal with it.

Good-Bye Newsgroups

While I'd like to call Comcast out on the floor for this one, they're just following suit of what many other ISPs have already done. I don't even think it's a cost thing as much as Comcast trying to comply with some new child porn laws. Comcast didn't really offer that much newsgroup goodness anyway with their 2GB a month caps. Comcast users now just have to find a third-party newsgroup service and pay a few bucks a month. The fact that probably only 5% of Comcast users even know what a newsgroup is I can see why they killed it off.

Blocking Port 25

This is another area where I can see both sides of it. On Comcast's side blocking port 25 helps reduce the amount of SPAM flowing from their pipes. On the user's side, if you want to send mail through another server you have to be a bit more tech inclined. It took me a grand total of about 10 minutes to figure out how to add another port on my server and to change my default email program's outgoing SMTP port to get back up and running. So, in this case I also can't claim this is a big deal. If you don't know how to change from port 25 to something else you probably shouldn't be trying to do so anyway.

So that's about it. The caps are reasonable to me at the moment and as long as Comcast keeps moving the caps up as they move the speeds higher and higher I think that 99% of their customers will be happy. The other 1% are the types that all-you-can-eat buffets have dreaded for years now, the customers that aren't really profitable to Comcast to service them so in the long run they'd probably NOT service them at all.

The days of people feeling like Internet service is unlimited are over, and that may not be a bad thing. After all, you pay for other utilities by how much you use. With electricity, water and gasoline for your car the more you need the more you pay. At least Comcast is starting us off at a generous cap that should satisfy most users with a set montly price. That other 1% should pay more.
